Hol' die verdammte Abrissbirne raus! "Now when all this steel and these stories, they drift away to rust / And all our youth and beauty, it's been given to the dust / When the game has been decided and we're burning down the clock / And all our little victories and glories have turned into parking lots", singt Bruce Springsteen 2012 im Titelsong von "Wrecking Ball".
Es ist nicht der einzige Song, der sich um den Verfall des Lebensraum dreht. In "Death To Hometown", einem Folk-Rock-Stampfer sondergleichen, fordert er in bester Guthrie-Manier zum Protest auf: "Now get yourself a song to sing and sing it 'til you're done / Yeah, sing it hard and sing it well / Send the robber barons straight to hell." Auf "Wrecking Ball" singt Springsteen, was aus dem Traum geworden ist: heruntergekommene Städte, geplatzte und zubetonierte Träume. Zu Beginn steht das hemdsärmelige Versprechen, das aus dem Ganzen aber eine Kampfansage macht: "We Take Care Of Our Own".
